Reptiles have always been associated with the sign of Scorpio. The symbolism of the snake shedding its skin reflects Scorpio's powers of transformation and its natural association with death and disintegration. And there is no better figure to represent the sign of the scorpion than the mythic Medusa.

There are various versions of Medusa’s origin story, but in all of them she is violated by the God Poseidon, and the result is a woman transformed by her outrage and bitterness. Medusa’s face is the embodiment of the horrors of life’s unfairness. If one stumbles across her and stares directly into her eyes, they become paralyzed and turn to stone. 

On the personal level, the Medusa lives in all of us. We all experience life’s unfairness, whether directly, indirectly, or incidentally, and some life experiences leave us paralyzed. Psychologically, these experiences turn people into stone, and they become fixated on their wounds, unable to break free, preventing their growth and personal development. 

Perseus (the son of Zeus) is tasked with going into Medusa’s layer, at the opening of the underworld (the unconscious), to slay the serpentine monster and retrieve her head. Perseus receives help on his mission from several divine beings who give him a few magical items.  He enters Medusa’s layer and ultimately finds her. He uses a magical shield (think mirror) so that he does not look at Medusa directly, and then he cuts off her head and puts it in a magic bag. Once Medusa’s head is severed, out of the toxic blood and poison, Pegasus is born – a beautiful creature that becomes Perseus’s companion. 

The good news is that myth always provides a solution, even to the most complex stories. Medusa represents our repressed toxic pain or self-defeating behaviors that leave us stuck and unable to grow. These feelings and behaviors have grown over time and taken over our lives. Perseus represents the process of working through our issues, and he does so by staring into a mirror. Now, I do not know about you, but when I look into a mirror, I see myself.  So, Perseus reflects turning inward and seeing oneself honestly. By seeing things clearly, one can turn toxic poisons into something productive and worthwhile. The horrors of Medusa transform into Pegasus, and out of the darkness of Scorpio comes the light of consciousness, and ultimately, freedom from toxins.

This is the power of Scorpio season. We can use its energy to transform the areas of our lives that are wounded into powerful tools that we can use to give life more meaning.

Although Mars and Saturn are back in the mix for October (they were pretty much absent in September), it’s a pretty slow month. The only really big thing to note is the solar eclipse in Libra and the lunar eclipse in Taurus. Watch the world stage, the headlines will definitely deliver.

October 13, 2023 – Mars in Scorpio trine Saturn in Pisces – Great day to get things done, especially if you have tasks to complete that require tenacity and discipline.

October 22, 2023 – Venus in Virgo trine Jupiter in Taurus – Get your social groove on! If you want to attract a new relationship or improve an existing one, Venus trine Jupiter delivers. 

October 24, 2023 – The Sun in Scorpio trine Saturn in Pisces – Push forward with whatever you want to accomplish or achieve. Small steps forward lead to big results!

October 31, 2023 – Venus in Virgo trine Uranus in Taurus – Excellent time to spice up your romantic life by trying something different. Shake things up by expanding your horizons.

October 8, 2023 – Mars in Libra square Pluto in Capricorn – Power struggles and disagreements. Avoid people that are on a power trip.

October 10, 2023 – Venus in Virgo oppose Saturn in Pisces – Problems in relationships may surface. You may go through feelings of isolation and insecurity.

October 21, 2023 – Sun in Libra square Pluto in Capricorn – Patterns that no longer work for you may be revealed. Purge what is no longer working.

Lunar Magic

Solar Eclipse in Libra:

On October 14th, eclipse season begins with a Solar Eclipse in Libra. If there was a notable epicenter for the yearly lunation cycles through the signs, then eclipses would be it. Eclipses occur when a lunation (New Moon or Full Moon) occurs within 18 degrees of the lunar nodes, and there are between 4-8 eclipses per year. So, for personal purposes, you can view eclipses as ‘hot spots’ or areas that you need to work through during a given year. During eclipse season, I only recommend doing transformational and protection magic.

Lunar Eclipse in Taurus:

The Lunar Eclipse occurs on October 28th in Taurus. Since the eclipse is in Taurus, security, financial resources, and self-worth will be the primary focus. The eclipse is in a sign-based conjunction with expansive Jupiter and disruptive Uranus, so changes with Taurus’ realm should be expected. Furthermore, I do not recommend aggressive magic during this eclipse. Instead, I recommend protection, healing, and spiritual cleansing work.

Weekly Breakdown

October 2, 2023 – October 8, 2023

The beginning of the week should come with a warning sign: Check and verify everything! Why?  Mercury, the planet of communication, opposes Neptune in Pisces. Mercury opposing Neptune is a tricky aspect in every sense of the word, because of its association with deception, shady activity, and scams. Be careful if you are presented with an opportunity that is too good to be true because it probably is. The good news is Mercury trines Pluto on Tuesday, and the truth will ultimately be revealed. 

Midweek, Mercury still dominates the cosmic energy as he moves out of Virgo and into Libra. Mercury in Libra likes fair and balanced communication and has a deep disdain for a lack of civility. This is the perfect time for negotiations, business deals, and signing documents. Since Libra is associated with relationships, if you need to air out your grievances or make amends, this is the perfect time to do it. Mercury remains in Libra until October 22nd. 

This weekend is troubling, as the Moon moves through emotional Cancer and triggers Mars square Pluto on Sunday. Mars square Pluto is usually about power struggles. You will feel the need to push yourself to the next level, but Pluto often feels like the world is against you, and this can lead to deep frustration and sometimes paranoia. Avoid acting manipulatively, or it may lead to blowback. Also on Sunday, Venus (at long last) moves out of Leo and into Virgo. Venus in Virgo is the perfect time to look at your relationships and see if you are getting your needs met, and if you are not, you can make changes.

This week starts with challenging energy on Tuesday when Venus squares Saturn in Pisces. Relationships can be tense during this time, and you may feel disconnected from the ones you are closest to. Don't succumb to feelings of loneliness -- instead, try to focus on yourself and understand your own motives and intentions. Take a pause and reframe these moments as opportunities for growth. Embrace the discomfort and allow yourself to move through it.

During the middle of the week, Mars will move out of Libra and into Scorpio. In Scorpio, the warrior god becomes the military general with the capacity to be focused, disciplined, and easily overcome obstacles. Mars in Scorpio is also high-energy, but in ways that are fixed and controlled, so it can be sustained for longer periods. This is your opportunity to pursue your goals because you have the tenacity and endurance to make things happen. 

This weekend, besides the solar eclipse in Libra, Mars trines Saturn in Pisces. After moving into Scorpio, Mars’ first aspect is to Saturn, and this aspect is perfect for gathering resources and gaining the stamina to go after what you want. Now Mars trine Saturn is not glamorous, it’s about doing the work necessary to get results. Often this requires plugging away at something over and over until you break through obstacles that stand in your way. But with enough patience, you will ultimately succeed.

This week will be intense and transformative, and perhaps the most difficult since the middle of July, amplified by eclipse season. So, buckle your seat belt, most of the week will be challenging, to say the least.

We start the week with the Moon moving through Scorpio, and it’s a preview of the energies coming this weekend. The Moon in Scorpio is about letting go of the old and embracing the new. It’s an auspicious time to listen to your gut, especially if you are uncomfortable with a situation. This may lead you to make dramatic changes in your life, which are for your greater good.

We get a bit of reprieve from this week’s energy on Wednesday as the Moon moves into Sagittarius. It’s the perfect time to relax and enjoy yourself before the weekend. Try to focus on your future goals and what you can do to bring them to fruition. Also, learning something new or exploring your interests would be a productive way to work with this energy.

On Friday, the challenging energy begins and continues throughout the weekend. We start with Mercury square Pluto. Try not to get fixated on a single thought or idea. It’s best to look at all your options before making a decision, because Mercury square Pluto may trigger your fears. Avoid trying to coerce people into co-signing your agenda, because it will probably lead to difficulties and confrontations.

On Saturday, it’s the Sun’s turn to bat as he tangles with Pluto. The best way to work with Sun square Pluto is to let go of patterns or attitudes that are not working for you, especially self-defeating behaviors. We do get a cosmic assist on Sunday when Mercury moves into Scorpio. The areas of your life that are not working properly will be revealed. You can then use your knowledge and insight to make transformative changes for your greater good.

October 23, 2023 – October 29, 2023

We start the last week of October, with the Sun moving into Scorpio. This year, Scorpio season is special, because immediately after the Sun moves into the sign of the scorpion, the Sun trines Saturn in Pisces. The Sun in Scorpio augurs a season where we are encouraged to look at our lives, make changes to what is no longer working, let go of things that do not, and connect deeply with others. The good news is that the Sun trine Saturn is a productive aspect that gives us the discipline and self-control to work on intense issues and make lasting changes. The Sun trine Saturn is also good for completing tasks that need completion. 

Emotions will be high during the middle of the week as the Moon moves through Pisces. Expect some mild confusion as the Moon conjoins Neptune, and it’s best not to make decisions at this time. On Thursday, the Moon moves into Aries, and you should feel your groove slowly returning. Use this burst of energy to take control of your life. Anything is possible with enough effort.

This weekend is a bit of a dog’s breakfast. Besides the potent eclipse in Taurus, Mars opposes Jupiter and conjoins Mercury. First, on Saturday, Mars opposes Jupiter. Mars opposing Jupiter is a dynamic and fiery aspect that brings an abundance of energy, and an increase in confidence and courage, that you can use to focus on your goals and objectives. However, avoid being excessive. On Sunday, put a watch on your tongue, because where the mind goes, the lips will follow.
